Project Taiko
in Strathaven, Blackwood & the Mugen Taiko Dojo
Free performance project for youths aged 12-25
A unique opportunity to learn a Taiko piece in 10 weekly sessions, leading to a performance alongside professional taiko players at a showcase concert in Strathaven. The project is free of charge, thanks to funding from Creative Scotland Youth Music Initiative.

"Project Taiko" is an exciting new opportunity for 12-25 year olds in South Lanarkshire to take part in a taiko performance project, fully funded by Youth Music Initiative. This is a unique chance to learn this dynamic & powerful art form on the large taiko drums. Taiko has been described as like a combination of music, energetic choreography and martial arts, and is fun and uplifting to play.
The project is taught by the top instructors from the UK's most well-know taiko drum group: Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers, who happen to be based locally.
"Project Taiko" begins in January 2026 and consists of 10 weeks of sessions learning a special composition written especially for the project. It is designed for complete beginners, so don't worry if you've never played an instrument before!
There are two separate groups - a 12-16 year olds and 17-25 year olds, taught at two separate time slots. The initial sessions will be in Strathaven & Blackwood, then the groups will join at the final rehearsals at our main base, the Mugen Taiko Dojo, where there will be transport provided as part of the funded project.
At the end of the 10 sessions, the 2 groups will perform alongside the professional players of Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers at a showcase concert at the Strathaven Mill Theatre. We hope that everyone who takes part will want to perform, but it's not an obligation of the project to do so.
There are free taster sessions prior to the start, so you're welcome to come & try it out with no obligation to join the full project. Come & find out how much fun taiko is!
