School Workshops
& Performances |
 |
The members of Mugenkyo have performed at hundreds of schools and have taught workshops to thousands of school-children throughout the country. Now these schools performances and workshops are under the umbrella of the Mugen Taiko Dojo.
The Dojo’s extensive outreach programme takes Taiko into the heart of communities and schools throughout the UK: performing educational concerts, conducting summer schools and educational projects for a wide range of groups – adults, children, special needs, hearing impaired, percussion groups, music teachers, theatre groups – as well as setting up school-based Taiko drum groups. |
| In both 1996 and 1999, Mugenkyo were awarded the Japan Festival Award for “outstanding achievements in furthering the understanding of Japanese culture in the United Kingdom”, largely due to their educational work at hundreds of schools. |

Educational CONCERTS |
 |
Over the last 12 years we have been performing educational concerts both at schools and at venues across the UK, introducing Taiko drumming within the rich context of Japanese folk culture. What are the drums made of? How were Taiko drums used in ancient Japan? Why are masks used in Taiko? How is taiko taught in Japan? |
| The educational concert is energetic, humorous and informative, introducing students to the exciting rhythms of taiko and the history & culture behind the music, brought alive with costume and drama, and with audience participation. |
 |
“Not just incredibly skilled musicians, they are also excellent performers: theatrical, humorous and energizing.” – Edinburgh Evening News. |
|
Hands-on Workshops |
| We conduct hands-on workshops at schools throughout the UK, for students of all ages. Taiko involves both rhythm and movement, with an emphasis on teamwork, and is a tremendous confidence booster for students. |
In the workshop, the students are taken step-by-step through the basics of taiko drumming, from the stance to the bachi drumstick grip. They learn a rhythm using the traditional verbal method, which allows taiko to be accessible to all. All taiko drums and bachi drumsticks are provided. |

performances and workshops for special-needs students |
| We conduct educational performances and hands-on workshops designed with the specific special needs of the students in mind, and have also worked with special-needs groups working towards a performance. |
