Introductory
Weekend Workshops |
 |
Learn to play the Taiko drums at the UK’s only Centre for Taiko Drumming, guided by teachers with a high level of expertise and experience.
The “introductory weekend workshop” covers the basics of Taiko drumming and is suitable for adults of all ages. The workshop takes participants step by step through the basics, from the stance to holding the bachi drumsticks, progressing step-by-step through the weekend. By the end of the two days the participants are able to play a short piece from the west coast of Japan. Suitable for all levels of ability and fitness, whether you’re an experienced drummer or have never held a pair of drumsticks before – all are welcome. |
| “What a team you are – each of you in your own way, helping, guiding, persevering to impart your knowledge to raw beginners to finally end up with a piece of Taiko drumming that was more than satisfying to each and every one of us, in every way possible.” |
 |
The rhythm will be taught in the traditional way – verbally, so don’t worry if you can’t read music. These are primarily hands-on workshops, but will also provide the opportunity to learn about the background of Taiko through demonstrations, explanations & video clips. |
| “I don’t have a single criticism of the whole weekend. The food was great and plentiful, the accommodation was perfect, the atmosphere was great – and above all that – I felt I really gained something wonderful from the tuition you provided… Neil – your mature and calming influence grounded the whole thing, and you’re a true professional. Miyuki – had I not heard it with my own ears, I wouldn’t have believed such a small person capable of such powerful and passionate playing. Teresa – you have a natural style and grace all of your own on the drum.” |
As well as for complete beginners, this is a good workshop to attend for drummers and percussionists, in order to understand the fundamentals of taiko. Attending an introductory workshop is essential for “skills transfer”, before moving on to the next level.
The introductory workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn to play a Taiko piece on these beautiful instruments, and offers a fascinating insight into the world of Taiko drumming. |

“In all my years, and believe me that’s quite a few, I’ve never been stirred, excited and energised by the pure energy and vitality that was generated and flowed freely, emanating primarily from yourselves and caught infectiously by us all.
What a weekend – you certainly knew how to light up my lights.” |

“I have just returned to work from the life-affirming exhilaration of a residential workshop at the Dojo. I would like to thank you all for one of the most fantastic experiences I have ever had the privilege of taking part in. I have been on a perpetual high since I came back from the weekend… what it felt like to be in that room amongst some 20 odd others thundering on these immense, statuesque drums and feeling like I was standing like a rock in the epicentre of a herd of horses charging into battle.” |
| For participants staying Friday & Saturday nights, there is a lift available between Glasgow, the accommodation in Strathaven and the Dojo. |
| “Thank you all for a fantastic weekend workshop. I had an absolutely unique time and loved every minute of it… I’m still buzzin’ from the whole event!!” |
