Introductory Weekend Workshop

Learn to play the taiko drums with Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers at their base & taiko training centre in central Scotland: the Mugen Taiko Dojo.

Introductory weekend workshops are suitable for adults of all ages & all levels of ability and fitness, whether you're an experienced drummer or have never held a pair of drumsticks before - all are welcome. We take you step by step through the basics, from the stance to the bachi drumstick grip, to fundamental rhythms, to using "ki energy" whilst playing.

The rhythms will be taught in the traditional method using verbal notation, so don't worry if you can't read music. These are primarily hands-on workshops, but will also provide the opportunity to learn about the background of Taiko through demonstrations, explanations & video clips.

As well as for complete beginners, we also recommend the introductory weekend to drummers & percussionists, in order to understand the fundamentals of taiko, which is essential before moving on to the next level.

The weekend workshop is held at the Mugen Taiko Dojo, a converted farmhouse in the South Lanarkshire countryside, within easy traveling distance of Glasgow & Edinburgh. Originally a 100 year old byre with two foot thick stone walls, the Dojo has been carefully converted into a purpose-built Taiko studio, the first of its kind in the UK, providing the ideal environment for learning this ancient discipline.

The Dojo is well equipped with a vast range of taiko drums & percussion, most of which are imported especially from Japan. All taiko drums & bachi drumsticks are provided for the weekend workshop.

The cost of the weekend is 190 UK pounds (non-residential), including a healthy lunch and refreshments on Saturday and Sunday, and can be booked through our online shop. For participants outside central Scotland, we also offer residential packages, where we book you in to local accommodation, and provide lifts between Glasgow, the accommodation and the Dojo. The additional cost is simply the cost of the accommodation.
