Taiko drumming - "Wadaiko" - is an energetic, physical and highly choreographed art form. Originally from Japan, with roots going back hundreds of years and encompassing a variety of styles, rhythms and movement, this traditional folk art is now developing and spreading as a modern European art form.

Now is the chance for people here in Scotland to experience a full course of this exciting discipline which is energetic & fun & learnt alongside other taiko enthusiasts!

Weekly course on Monday nights
Starting Monday 11th September until Monday 6th November 2017
(no session on Monday 16th October)

This course is designed to be suitable for both beginners & improvers, and will take the participants step by step from the stance, to the bachi drumstick grip through to learning a performance piece. We will be learning a piece called "Isami Goma". This is one of the "classic" taiko pieces, composed by the late Grandmaster Daihachi Oguchi who founded the legendary group Osuwa Daiko, based on rhythms from a Shinto Norito prayer. Isami Goma means "brave horse", and the rhythms sound like the pounding hooves of galloping horses. We received special permission from Watanabe Sensei of Fukushima to teach on this piece, which we're delighted to do for the first time in Edinburgh.

If you have previous experience in taiko, you may be interested in our "Taiko Night" group, which meets at 7:45-10pm on Tuesdays at the same venue.
