Taiko drumming - "Wadaiko" - is an energetic, physical and highly choreographed art form. Originally from Japan, with roots going back hundreds of years and encompassing a variety of styles, rhythms and movement, this traditional folk art is now developing and spreading as a modern European art form.
Now is the chance for people here in Scotland to experience a full course of this exciting discipline which is energetic & fun & learnt alongside other taiko enthusiasts!
There are two course options, both are suitable for complete beginners but as a rule we try to guide first-timers to the earlier class. The course will take the participants step by step from the stance, to the bachi drumstick grip through to learning a performance piece.
Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:00 pm - "Kitsune"
An energetic festival-style piece using the upbeat and funky shichisan ("donko") rhythm.
Tuesdays 8:15 - 9:45 pm - "Mitsu-uchi"
The traditional style of playing from the Hokuriku area, which forms the foundation of the Mugen style. This is the starting point for developing each individual's solo playing.
